Every four years with the World Cup looming, I find myself wondering who were coaches of the participating nations that possess previous World Cup experience either as players or managers.
This interest in these cycles of football continuity grew out of curiosity one afternoon while watching the Netherlands trashing Yugoslavia 6-1 during Euro 2000 on TV. During that game, with every goal scored by the Dutch, the camera zoomed on the distressed figure of Yugoslavia manager at the time, Vujadin Boskov. At the time, I recall I had great sympathy for the old man especially as the commentator mentioned he was the coach of the wonderful Sampdoria side that dazzled Serie A and Europe in the early 1990s.
As my interest in football history grew, I recalled that match a few years later and upon looking up the footballing journey of Boskov, I was fascinated by the richness of his career as a player and later as a coach who managed clubs in Netherlands, Spain and Italy. Moreover, I found it intriguing that he participated in two world cups in 1954 and 1958 as a right sided midfielder and found myself wondering why the commentators didn’t mention these facts. Out of my growing curiosity , I started researching the playing careers of World Cup managers since the 1930s to see which managers had previous playing predegree in the competition.
So I found out that the top scorer of the first World Cup Edition in 1930, Argentinian Guillermo Stabile coached the Albiceleste during the 1958 tournament in Sweden. The same way, legendary Austrian manager Ernst Happel who reached the 1978 World Cup final with the Dutch national team was a first choice defender for Austria at both the 1954 and 1958 World Cups and many other examples such as Sir Bobby Robson of England and Henri Michel of France and Luis Suarez of Spain.
Going through the list of the 2026 World Cup managers, we can see that 18 managers have previous World Cup experience as players. The trio of Carlo Ancelotti, Hugo Broos and Javier Aguirre were selected as part of the squads of Italy, Belgium and Mexico at Mexico 86. In addition to Ancelotti, there were four other players who were called up at Italia 90; Argentine Nestor Lorenzo who currently manages Colombia, Egyptian Hossam Hassan, Ronald Koeman and South Korea Libero, Myung Bo Hong. Koeman and Myung Bo also played four years later at USA 94.
Current France manager, Didier Deschamps is the only trainer on this list who won the tournament as a player in 1998 and 20 years later as manager. Uzbekistan current manager Fabio Cannavaro also lifted the trophy as a player with the Azzurri in 2006. Other managers who were selected in France 98 rosters include Moroccan Jamal Sellami who is the coach of Asian debutants Jordan and Norway manager, Stale Solbakken.
In 2002 World Cup, in addition to Myung Bo, who played his fourth and last tournament as a player, Fabio Cannavaro who played the second of four World Cup tournaments in his illustrious career, there was Cannavaro’s teammate Vincenzo Montella who’s currently coaching Turkey. There was also current Senegal manager Pape Thiaw who was part of the squad that reached the quarter finals.
Australia manager Tony Popovic and Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae both were part of the squads of their respective countries in the 2006 edition of the tournament. Reigning world champion Lionel Scaloni also featured as a player for the Albiceleste in Germany.

There are six Argentinian managers in the upcoming tournament while France has five representatives. There are four Spanish coaches in the tournament managing Qatar, Portugal, Panama in addition to Spain. While Italy didn’t qualify for the third successive tournament, they still have three Italian managers working for Brazil, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Germany also have three coaches managing Austria and England in addition to the Nationalmannschaft. Finally, there are also two English coaches at the tournament managing Sweden and New Zealand.
